Photo finishes highlight XC ski championships

Photo finishes were a common theme at the Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships, held Saturday at the Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club.

Photo finishes were a common theme at the Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships, held Saturday at the Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club.

The open men, junior female and peewee boys races were all determined by less than two seconds.

In the open men 12.5-km category, Knute Johnsgaard beat Colin Abbot by just half a second to take first place.

Johnsgaard finished with a top time of 27:59.2.

Colae Swenson topped Holly Bull by only 1.1 seconds to win the junior female 10-km race in 29:36.2, and Sasha Masson's time of 9:27.5 beat Nichollis Schmidt's result by half a second and Derek Deuling's by .8 seconds to win the peewee boys 2.5-km sprint.

"Thanks to great snow conditions and superb course preparation, skiers posted finishes in rapid time,鈥 chief of race, Jan Horton said in an email.

Julie McVicar won the 10-km open women in 29:37.3, while Trevor Bray won the junior boys 12.5-km.

Annah Hanthorn took home the junior girls crown, finishing the 10-km course in 27:12.6.

Caelan McLean beat Marcus Deuling by 4.8 seconds to win the juvenile boys 7.5-km race, while Cambria Fuerstner won the girls side in 23:00.4.

The midget 5-km races saw Liam Mather take the boys side in 15:23.9, and Hannah Shier win the girls race in 15:17.8.

Sonjaa Schmidt won the peewee girls 2.5-km sprint in 10:33.6.

Mettias Schmidt and Kate Mason won the 1.5-km atom races, with respective times of 6:27.4 and 7:18.3.

Johnsgaard and Hanthorn were named recipients of the Gordon Taylor Memorial Trophy, while Shier and Mather were named Schiffkorn Trophy winners for their top times.
