After a weather-related delay to the start of the softball season, the boys (and girls) of summer have returned to action on the city's diamonds.
Minor softball has retained strong numbers, with 20 teams competing in five divisions, Softball Yukon administrator Jean Poulin said last week.
Softball Yukon is the sport's governing body for the territory.
Four teams play in each age group, ranging from Under 6 to Under 14.
A group of 20-plus U-16 athletes also play informally Monday and Wednesday nights.
That means 325 youth are playing ball in Whitehorse 鈥 a number that has remained steady for the past five years.
With 300-plus young athletes and 800 adults playing ball this summer in the local co-ed league, softball remains a vibrant choice of activity in the Yukon.
"That's a good representation considering the territory's population,鈥 Poulin said.
Winter weather delayed the start of the season until mid-May, but the U-12 and U-14 championships will still be held in mid-June, as the season does not extend past the school calendar.
The six-week season is a busy one, with action going Monday through Thursday at the Pepsi Softball Centre and Takhini Elementary School.
Meanwhile, adult co-ed action will run until mid-August. Opening tournaments are scheduled for upcoming weekends.
The men's fastpitch program was cancelled this season.
The following scores were submitted from minor action Monday:
Under-6
Pepsi 9, Home Hardware 9
CKRW 8, Elk's Lodge 8
Under-8
Yukon Inn 10, Dave's Cleaning 10
Northwest Vacuum Services 9, Coates Services 9
Under-10
Olson Fencing 15, Whitehorse Star 8
Marsh Lake Tents & Events 16, TD Canada Trust 12
