Polarettes have strong showing at Outside gymnastics competition

Nine athletes from the Polarettes and Polar Tumblers, ages eight to 14, took part in the team meet.
"I call it a friendly neighbour meet between us and Juneau,鈥� said head coach Cat O'Donovan. "It gives all the kids competition experience.鈥�
For some of the athletes it was their first opportunity competing Outside.
Despite that inexperience, the young athletes excelled in the meet, taking first
place in every category.
Juneau will now send 13 athletes north of the border for the Yukon Champions on June 9.
The meet was another highlight in what has been a successful season for the club.
The team collected a bronze medal at the Arctic Winter Games in March in addition to four individual medals won by Fayne O'Donovan.
O'Donovan won gold in the vault competition, silver in both the balance beam and uneven bars and a bronze in the floor exercise.
The impressive performances continued in April where the team collected two gold medals at the B.C. Championships in Vancouver.
"It's been a really good year,鈥� said O'Donovan. "It's been very busy. The Yukon Championships will be our sixth competition since January.鈥�
The club boasts 27 pre-competitive and competitive athletes in addition to 200 recreational athletes.
For the team's competitive members, the training will continue into the summer.
"It's a 12-month a year program for the competitive athletes,鈥� said O'Donovan. "The summer training is a little more relaxed, it's a bit more fun based. There's no teams, we basically condition them and get them to work on skills they've always wanted to work on.
"It's totally different and fresh over the summer.鈥�
