Local residents will get a chance to show their street hockey skills this Saturday in a sports wheelchair fund-raiser for Aidan Love.

The tournament will start at 9 a.m. at Porter Creek Secondary School (PCSS).

Love, a 2010 graduate of PCSS, suffered a spinal injury in a skiing accident in Whistler on Feb. 12.

The second-year student at the University of Victoria began his recovery at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver since the incident but will be en route to Whitehorse this weekend, alongside his brothers.

Bonnie Love, Aidan's mother, said the tournament was a surprise.

"It was totally the undertaking of the students and staff at Porter Creek,鈥 she said.

"I'm just amazed.鈥

Love has been an active member of the local sports community his whole life, competing as a hockey player, skier and snowboarder and represented the Yukon at the 2009 Canada Games in volleyball.

"He loves hockey,鈥 Bonnie said of Aidan.

"He played team sports at PC, lots volleyball and always went out to things as they occurred.鈥

The proceeds raised in the tournament will go towards purchasing a sports wheelchair for Love, allowing him to remain active in the sporting community.

The sports wheelchairs are specifically designed to absorb contact and remedy balancing issues.

Bonnie said she'll be on hand to show her support and cheer on the teams.

The squads will compete in three categories: 13-15, 16-19 and those over 19.

With a minimum of four members per team and maximum of seven, the cost is $10 per player.

The rules of the tournament will mirror those of the CBC's Play On tournament that was held during last year's Hockey Day in Whitehorse.

The tournament will also feature a barbeque, a draw for a dinner and one-night stay the Skky Hotel, a draw for a quilt, a hardest shot contest, with speeds measured by the Whitehorse RCMP detachment and loonie sticks, a chance to win a hockey stick.

Contest entries are by donation.

Bonnie said Aidan is looking forward to his return to Whitehorse.

"I think he's excited,鈥 she said. "Maybe a little bit scared, it's a big step, but he's ready to try it all on, that's for sure.鈥
