The quest to become the next Yukon tennis champion began last night at the Mt. McIntyre tennis courts in Whitehorse.
The quest to become the next Yukon tennis champion began last night at the Mt. McIntyre tennis courts in Whitehorse.
The first games of the Tennis Yukon Championship were held at 5:30 p.m. followed by more games at 6:30 and 7:30.
The four courts at Mt. McIntyre will be busy with game action every night this week, with the finals set for Friday night.
This year, 10 players will compete in the men's singles pool, while seven will battle in women's singles.
Other titles up for grabs include men's doubles (six teams), women's doubles (three teams) and mixed doubles (two teams).
Longtime champ Jan Polivka is seeking a fifth straight men's singles title, while the women's crown is up for grabs with three-time defending champion Laurie Drummond not competing this year.
2012 champions included Jan Polivka (men's singles), Laurie Drummond (women's singles), Jan Polivka and Alex Roberts (men's doubles), Betty Irwin and Hoby Irwin (senior mixed doubles), Michel Gelinas and Laurie Drummond (mixed doubles) and Alex Roberts (U-18).
