Rams crush Crusaders to complete dream season

The Porter Creek Rams senior girls volleyball team capped a spectacular season with their third gold medal win Saturday afternoon.

The Rams defeated the Vanier Crusaders in two sets to win the Yukon championships 鈥 securing the third jewel necessary to complete their triple crown season.

Earlier this year, the Rams won gold at the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament, and also claimed gold in the local Super Volley series.

The latest gold medal also marks the third straight year the Porter Creek senior girls have emerged victorious at the Yukon championships.

The Rams鈥 final victory came relatively easily, as they dispatched the Crusaders with scores of 25-15 and 25-13 at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely been a strong season for them,鈥 Rams coach Amy Palamar told the Star post-game. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e worked really hard and won a lot of games.鈥

Palamar said her group鈥檚 energy and tenacity got them started down the road to success.

鈥淎 triple crown win is what we wanted,鈥濃坰he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the ultimate dream. It鈥檚 been a battle and it means so much.

鈥淚鈥檓 super proud of the girls. When we started, they were a group of individuals, but ending the season they鈥檙e a team. Their unity is spectacular.鈥

Rams setter Hannah Milner was named tournament MVP, while teammates Sam Wintemute and Tayla McNally received all-麻豆社区nods.

Rounding out the tournament all-麻豆社区team were Olivia Holmes (Dawson), Avery Bramadat (F.H.), Jiela Tobias (Vanier) and Chloe Turner-Davis (Vanier).

Milner, 17, said the triple crown opportunity had her feeling butterflies.

鈥淲e were really nervous that they would take our triple crown away,鈥 the Grade 12 student said of their rival Crusaders. 鈥淲e played really hard to get to where we are ... It鈥檚 really exciting. It feels amazing.鈥

Other members of Porter Creek鈥檚 dream team were: Emma Hoogland, Vanessa Fischer, Teah Dickson, Aly Wiens, Ashley Lai, Erin Hochn and Reanna 麻豆社区ome.

Crusaders coach Terri Park said her squad gave it their best shot.

鈥淭here was a lot of depth on this team,鈥 she said. 鈥淭here was some really strong players and leaders.

鈥淥ur defence could have stepped it up a bit,鈥 she said of the final. 鈥淥ur coverage was a little slow at times. Really it came down to that. We weren鈥檛 picking up those dumps to the middle as quickly as we should have.鈥

Dawson City won bronze.
