River Quest festivities begin with canoe race
This year's Yukon River Quest festivities got underway last weekend with the 28-km Ice Breaker Race.
This year's Yukon River Quest festivities got underway last weekend with the 28-km Ice Breaker Race.
The event, which sees paddlers race the Yukon River from the Marsh Lake dam to Schwatka Lake, is an annual tradition.
Solo kayaker Jason Zrum led all paddlers with a race result of two hours, 14 minutes.
Race participants Pauline Frost and Jim Boyde finished second in 2:22, followed by kayaker Alison Morham (2:26).
A voyageur canoe manned by Daniel Girouard, Jacy Sam, Tyler Millwater, Will Connellan-Frost, Ashton Clooten and Joel Girouard placed fourth with a time of 2:27. The group is training for the upcoming Indigenous Games.
Organizer Peter Coates and paddling partner Thomas Coates placed fifth, while Jeremy Stavely and Gillian Stavely also raced.
The race was held last Saturday morning and paddlers endured wind from all sides alongside rain.
"Nevertheless, it was a good race,鈥濃圕oates told the Star.
Future events prior to the River Quest include a 30-km training run on the Yukon River June 21 followed by a 20-km run June 22.
Race festivities will kick into high gear the following day.
