Hockey Yukon and the Yukon Rivermen have announced they鈥檝e welcomed Shawn Talbot as the latest addition to team staff and the family.

Talbot鈥檚 leadership, contributions, and decades of coaching experience are well known.

鈥淲orking with Hockey NWT鈥檚 interest to engage in the Rivermen model is a natural partnership,鈥� says U-16 head coach Martin Lawrie in a brief announcement Monday. 鈥淪hawn is a great catch.鈥�

The intent is to have Talbot work out of Yellowknife as the Rivermen co-ordinator. He鈥檒l oversee the training and coaching of N.W.T. players who have made the Rivermen roster or are on their way to earning a position with the club.

鈥淪hawn understands the challenge and experience of high performance hockey at our latitudes,鈥� adds U-15 head coach Carl Burgess. 鈥淚鈥檝e coached against him. Happier to coach with him.鈥�

鈥淭here is much interest and admiration for the strides the Rivermen team has taken,鈥� says Talbot. 鈥淚 can鈥檛 wait for the season to start up.鈥�

Talbot has served as head coach for Team NWT and has been honoured with multiple Coach of the Year awards. He has knowledge in officiating and executive program management.

The Rivermen have announced Kevin Petovello, a former member of the Whitehorse Huskies and a Coy Cup winner, will serve as assistant coach for the U-16 midgets under Lawrie. They鈥檝e also announced Jean-Benoit Deschamps will serve as assistant coach for the U-15 squad under Burgess.

After holding the last of their selection camps later this month, both the U-15 and U-16 teams will be bringing expanded rosters for a final evaluation to the John Ferguson Evaluation Tournament in Edmonton in mid-September.
