For the first time in four years, there was a new name at the top of the list in the annual Dawson City Midnight Dome race.

Roberto Desandoli dethroned four-time champion Stephen Waterreus, who was absent from the event this year.

Desandoli completed the run, which features more than 560-metres of elevation, in 35 minutes and 49 seconds this past Saturday.

Ninety-five runners took part in the race, which routinely draws competitors from across North America.

Held on the same weekend as the Dawson City Music Festival, the Midnight Dome provides festival goers with a chance to recoup from their partying ways with a grueling challenge.

Starting in downtown Dawson at 10 a.m., participants run over seven kilometres to the top of Dome Road before jumping onto a trail and reaching the summit.

The men's open division was the biggest draw, with 44 runners taking part ranging in age from 18 to 39.

The race also featured three runners competing in the U13 division, Lila Yahusz-Bell on the women's side and Justin Hishart-MacDougall and Sam Crocker in the mens.

Another notable name in the race was Ryan Leef.

The Yukon MP placed third in the male open division with a time of 38:23.

The fastest walker on the day was Barbara Grueger, who completed the distance in one hour and eight minutes.

Trailing Desandoli was Fabian Brook, a member of the Yukon ski team that placed second overall this past winter in the Haywood Ski Nationals.

Brook won gold at Nationals, leading the way in his first indivudal race, the junior boy's 10-km.

Brook was less than two minutes behind the speedy Desandoli who was about four

minutes short of Steven Page's record time in the event.

Dome Run top five finishers:

  1. Fabian Brook: 37:07

3.Ryan Leef: 38:23
