Logan Roots is back in town, and he's making his presence known on the local running circuit.

The 19-year-old 麻豆社区long-distance runner won the rain- and mud-soaked Air North Yukon's Airline Runway Family Fun Run Saturday morning, completing the 8.75-km loop around Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport in a quick 32:23.

The charity run raised more than $1,000 for Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY).

Roots was the first competitor to eat breakfast, enjoying some well-deserved pancakes post-run.

"It's flat for the most part, but then you get the wind,鈥 Roots said of the airport loop.

"I wasn't going all out. We're in the middle of pretty heavy training for Canada Games right now, so it was just a fun run on a Saturday morning.鈥

Roots, who attended school in Victoria, B.C. this year, returned home about three weeks ago. He has been training to compete in the 1,500- and 5,000-metre runs at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke, Que. this August.

He and his training partner Logan Boehmer will be regulars at the Tuesday night Millennium Trail runs and Thursday night trail runs.

Walkers kicked off the day with a mass start at 9 a.m., followed by the pack of runners at 9:30.

The race featured 249 competitors, said event organizer Tanner Hougen, a marketing and sales assistant with Air North this summer.

"It was pouring rain, freezing cold, and they just kept coming, so that was pretty good,鈥 Hougen said.

The route took runners and walkers around the fenced-off airport grounds, starting from Air North's administration building.

The pancake breakfast was put on by the company's flight kitchen, while Home Hardware organized the water stations for the race alongside LDAY volunteers.

LDAY is a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of those with learning disabilities. The organization is celebrating 40 years of providing leadership in learning disabilities advocacy, education, programs and services to advance the full participation of those with learning disabilities in today's society.
