Two local running circuits are underway as the summer sports season heats up.

Last Tuesday, the Sportslife 5-km fun run and walk series began with 25 participants hitting the Millenium Trail from the F.H. Collins parking lot in Riverdale.

Yukon MP Ryan Leef was the top finisher, completing the scenic loop in a quick 20:18. Young runner Brody Smith (20:36) finished second and Tom Ullyett (21:04) placed third.

Sue Bogle won the women's division with an equally quick time of 21:34. Amelia Fraser (22:26) and Julia Gerlach (22:34) finished six seconds apart to place second and third, respectively.

Stalwart power walker Philip Gibson (38:03) carried the flag for all walkers to finish first in that category.

This past Tuesday's race saw more than 30 participants, with XC skier John Parry leading the way around the trail in a time of 17:17.

Logan Roots and Logan Boehmer finished tied for second (19:55) and Matt Janzen was fourth 鈥 just two seconds behind the Logans.

Bogle (20:58) shaved more than 35 seconds off her previous winning time to take the women's division for the second straight week.

This week, Gerlach (21:51) was second and Fraser placed third (22:11).

Meanwhile, the Coast Mountain Sports Trail Run series saw nearly 50 athletes take to the 6.5-km Magnusson 鈥榬oller coaster' trail on Grey Mountain.

Robert Gillis won the men's side in a time of 31:20, and was followed closely by Tom Ullyett (31:53) and Ben Yu-Schott (32:33).

Meanwhile, Lauren Whyte (31:56) won the ladies side, with Kealy Sweet (32:16) and Victoria Ryan (35:22) finishing two-three.

Trail marshal Terry Boone said someone destroyed the flagging at a crucial intersection, which nearly derailed the race.

"Luckily those ahead of me knew the course,鈥 Boone said, noting that flagging is very important for safety reasons.

"With so many intersecting trails, it is very easy for somebody not familiar with the course or the area to get lost.鈥
