Northern Alberta鈥檚 newly minted senior men鈥檚 curling champs
Northern Alberta鈥檚 newly minted senior men鈥檚 curling champs have booked themselves a trip to the Boston Pizza Cup and have a chance to play for a berth at the Tim Hortons Brier.
Thomas Scoffin鈥檚 rink, featuring third Tristan Steinke, second Jason Ginter and lead Brett Winfield will battle Alberta鈥檚 best men鈥檚 curling teams starting Feb. 8 in Westlock, Alta., to see who will represent the province at the Brier in St. John鈥檚, N.L.
鈥淲e鈥檙e feeling great. We鈥檙e on a bit of a roll here,鈥 said 22-year-old skip鈥圫coffin this morning. 鈥淲e鈥檙e just looking to carry that through to provincials.鈥
For most of the rink, it will be their first time competing at the senior men鈥檚 provincials.
However they are no stranger to big competition.
In November, the team won its first World Curling Tour, the Dawson Creek Cash Spiel.
Scoffin, originally from Whitehorse, has also played internationally, leading Canada to a bronze medal at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
This roster is a new look for the Scoffin rink, who got their start playing together at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where Scoffin is in his fifth year.
With Alberta powerhouse team Kevin Koe getting a bye to the Brier, it opens up the field for a new generation of teams to compete on the national stage.
Scoffin said his team is hoping to take advantage of that. They鈥檙e seeded fifth and will take on bottom-seed Robinson in their first game on Feb. 8.
鈥淲e鈥檙e just getting more and more consistent making the shots we need to make,鈥 he said.
And as well as they played at Northerns, Scoffin doesn鈥檛 think his team has hit their best yet.
鈥淲e鈥檙e feeling confident... We鈥檙e going to have to have our A-game,鈥 he said,
鈥淎nd to be honest I don鈥檛 even know if we found our A-game in the Northerns.鈥
