A sure sign of the winter season's return will take place in Whitehorse and Haines Junction Saturday.

Ski swaps will be held in both areas Saturday as residents prepare for another snowy winter.

The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club's annual ski swap will see many bargain hunters up early to get in line for the 9 a.m. opening at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre.

A couple of changes this year will make the early line-up a more enjoyable experience.

The Whitehorse Curling Club will be offering a breakfast service and coffee beginning at 8 a.m. and the Winter Fair downstairs will be open at 8:30 to give swappers a preview of what's to come for the winter months from local vendors.

There will be dealers, clubs, and local businesses on hand to answer questions and show off the latest in equipment.

The ski swap is the main attraction and the doors are open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

All kinds of winter sports gear will be for sale, including cross-country and downhill skis, hockey equipment, snowboards, snow bikes, winter camping gear, and more.

The key to a great ski swap is having a lot of good equipment to sell. Whitehorse residents are encouraged to check closets, attics, garages, and basements for winter gear that can be re-used.

Equipment can be brought to Mount McIntyre on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this week. Any equipment that is in good condition and valued at $5 or more can be sold at the swap. There is a $2 charge for each tag and the ski club will keep 20 per cent of the sale price.

For more information, visit the Club's website at http://www.xcskiwhitehorse.ca or call 668-4477.

In Haines Junction, the St. Elias Ski Club and Haines Junction Minor Hockey Association will also host a sports gear swap on Saturday at the St. Elias Community School gym from 10 a.m. to noon.

The gear swap is expected to be a popular event in the community and will help raise funds for the two clubs.

Ten per cent of each sale will be split between the ski club and minor hockey. Other fund-raising activities will include a bake sale, 50/50 draw and tea and coffee.

Haines Junction residents can drop off their gear on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the school gym. Residents can pick up their proceeds and unsold gear on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Buyers and sellers should note that this is a cash-only event.

For more information on the Junction swap, call 634-2884 or email organizers at steliasskiclub@gmail.com or hjhockey@hotmail.com.
