The Spectrum Security Bears won the Bob Park Icebreaker Broomball Tournament Sunday afternoon, sweeping away Roadhouse 3-0 in the championship game.

"I was very good friends with Bobby Park, so it's a hard one to take away from the Roadhouse,鈥 Bears captain Josh Hirsch told the Star post-game. "They used to be Bobby's team, so it was a hard one to take.鈥

Park 鈥 a well-known broomball enthusiast 鈥 owned the Roadhouse pub prior to losing his battle with cancer in August 2006.

Nicholas Wilson and Ryan Martin scored early in the first period to stake the Bears to a 2-0 lead.

Roadhouse mustered little offence on a second period powerplay, and Shayne Fairman put the game out of reach with an insurance goal late in the frame.

With a minute left in the game, Roadhouse pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but it was to no avail.

It marked the second time the Bears shutout Roadhouse in the tournament, after they won their round robin matchup 4-0.

Spectrum Security finished the tournament with a 5-1 record. Their only loss was a 5-1 decision at the hands of Nacho Nyak Dun DC in round-robin play.

Justin Saunders of Nacho Nyak Dun DC led the tournament in scoring with seven goals.

They extracted their revenge in the semifinals, however.

Lars Jessup netted the game winner in overtime 鈥 a pretty, seeing-eye shot that found its way into the top corner 鈥 as the Bears managed to upset their rivals 2-1.

"They never lose,鈥 Hirsch said. "Our team just started playing awesome. We picked it up. Today was the best ball we've played, and whoever is hot usually wins the tournament.

"I think this is just about the most exciting tournament of the year,鈥 he added. "It's fun, and it's a great change for us to play inside, instead of our outside rink. To be able to have this tournament in Bob's name every year, and then to win it, it's a great honour.鈥

Hirsch led his team with five goals, but he said the most valuable player was goaltender Chris Sawyer.

"He was fantastic,鈥 Hirsch said. "He's always the rock every year. We somehow make the finals for league almost every year, and it's been his anchor most of the time. Even if we're not that good, we still get there.鈥

Last season, the Bears lost to the undefeated Nacho Nyak Dun DC in the championship.

League president Milford Allain said the Bob Park tournament is a unique one on the season's schedule.

"You get so many new people that want to come out and try it, so it really gets people involved,鈥 he said. "We saw a ton of new players this tournament. It's great to see.鈥
