The Nuway Crushing Whitehorse Huskies
The Nuway Crushing Whitehorse Huskies are ready for their third series of the season. They鈥檒l meet southern Alberta鈥檚 Kainai Braves for a two-game series this weekend.
The first game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at their home Takhini Arena. Puck drop for game two is 5 p.m. Sunday.
The Huskies are 3-1.
They host B.C.鈥檚 senior men鈥檚 AA top tournament, the Coy Cup March 28 - April 1.
The only Yukon women鈥檚 team to put their name forward is heading back to the country鈥檚 top women鈥檚 curling bonspiel. Team Koltun will be representing the territory for the third time at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St. Catharines, Ont. from Feb. 18- 26.
The team is skipped by Sarah Koltun, with third Chelsea Duncan, second Patty Wallingham, lead Jenna Duncan, fifth Helen Strong and coach Bill Tschirhart.
In 2014, Team Koltun became the first women鈥檚 rink from the Yukon to attend the Scotties in 13 years (skip Koltun, lead Andrea Sinclair, second Wallingham, third, Chelsea Duncan, fifth, Lindsay Moldowan). They were also the first team in Canada to attend both the junior nationals and the Scotties in the same year.
Team Koltun has yet to make it to the main draw at the Scotties.
The team will start with pre-qualification play against Nunavut on Feb. 16. Also in pre-qualification are New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories.
Only one team will advance after three pre-qualification games to the main draw.
In 2016, Yukon was represented by Team Baldwin and did not advance to the main draw.
The Yukon women鈥檚 championships were scheduled for this weekend, but since only one team signed up, the event is no longer needed.
The men鈥檚 championships will continue as scheduled with seven teams challenging to represent Yukon at the鈥圱im Hortons Brier, which will be held in St. John's, N.L. from March 4 -12. The competition will take place Jan. 12 - 15 at the Whitehorse Curling Club.
The defending champions, team Smallwood will be playing for another shot at the Brier, minus Jon Solberg, who is skipping his own team.
