Special Olympian Michael Sumner was awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal just prior to his trip to the World Winter Games.

Yukon MP Ryan Leef presented the figure skater with the coveted medal yesterday.

"Michael Sumner is a remarkable young man,鈥� said Leef. "I can't think of a better ambassador for the Yukon.

"He is an inspiration to all athletes by maintaining a well-rounded focus on athletic and academic development. His contributions are outstanding and this honour is well-deserved.鈥�

Sumner, 16, leaves today for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The competition will be held from Jan. 29 to Feb. 5. Approximately 3,300 athletes from 120 countries are expected to compete at the event.

Sumner was the only Yukoner named to Team Canada. His selection was based on past performances at national games.

The F.H. Collins student will perform a figure skating routine to the theme of Pirates of the Caribbean 鈥� Black Pearl.

Special Olympics Yukon held a press conference at the Sport Yukon office in Whitehorse last week to make the announcement.

"You ask me, am I nervous? Sometimes. But for the most part, I am so excited and I am thankful to have this amazing opportunity,鈥� Sumner told those in attendance.

Sumner also attended the 2009 Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games to compete in bocce.

The commemorative Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal will be presented throughout the year to 60,000 deserving Canadians to celebrate significant contributions to the country.
