Michael Sumner has done the territory and the country proud.

The 16-year-old figure skater won a silver medal today at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Ranked fifth following his compulsory skate Wednesday, Sumner performed a near-perfect free skate today, winning it for an overall ranking of second overall.

Special Olympics Yukon executive director Serge Michaud was ecstatic.

"That's what dreams are made of,鈥 Michaud said of Sumner's comeback medal win.

"You never know what to expect. I just had no idea what he could do.鈥

Sumner was competing in men's Level 1 singles against seven other athletes age 14 to 17.

"That was the best eight in the world,鈥 Michaud said. "And he did it. He killed it. It's mind-blowing.鈥

Sumner was the only Yukoner named to Team Canada, made up of 141 athletes.

The F.H. Collins student performed his routine to the theme of Pirates of the Caribbean 鈥 Black Pearl.

The silver medal caps an exciting couple of weeks for Sumner, who was awarded a Diamond Jubilee medal by Yukon MP Ryan Leef just prior to his flight to South Korea.

Sumner's silver is the fourth for Team Canada at the World Games, to go along with four golds.

The competition runs to Feb. 5. Sumner is expected to be welcomed back at the Whitehorse airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Sumner was the first Yukon figure skater at the World Games since 1993.
