Glacier Bears coach Stephanie Dixon is expecting the Yukon's contingent of five swimmers competing in the B.C. AA championships this weekend will walk away with personal best times.
The event in Surrey will see Luc and Thomas Bakica, Matthew Blakesley, Taylor Harvey and Dannica Nelson compete among 200 swimmers from throughout B.C.
"I think it will be a wonderful experience,鈥 Dixon said in an interview Thursday, noting that while the swimmers travelled to Victoria for the Christmas Cracker event in December, this is different in that swimmers had to meet a qualifying time to compete.
She was pleased that all five were well-under their qualifying times. Going into the competition she said she's been working with the 10 to 13 year olds on mental preparation as well, going over how to deal with the excitement and other emotions that can come with competition.
Dixon has also gone over the role hydration and nutrition play in competition.
As for whether any medals may be coming back to the territory, Dixon said she focuses on the swimmers making personal bests when it comes to results.
"At the end of the day, it's just about enjoying themselves,鈥 she said.
This is the first of two Outside competitions for the Glacier Bears this month. On Feb. 28, two swimmers from the club will head down to Victoria for the AAA championships.
