Tagish musher Michelle Phillips was the first to leave the Carmack's checkpoint on the way to Pelly Crossing in the Quest 300 race that kicked off Saturday afternoon.
Phillips checked out at 11:10 p.m. last night, just eight minutes ahead of Aliy Zirkle, the Alaskan musher who in 2000 became the first woman to win the Yukon Quest.
It appears as though the battle for victory in the Quest 300 is now between Phillips and Zirkle, as the third place musher, Jerry Joinson, didn't leave Carmacks until 6:33 a.m. today.
Following the Saturday morning start of the Yukon Quest, seventeen mushers lined up at 3 p.m.for the start of the Quest 300.
All but one had reached Carmacks as of 7:30 this morning.
Two mushers have scratched.
Zirkle was sixth out of the chute Saturday, just two minutes ahead Phillips, who ran the Iditarod last year.
