SUPER SUB 鈥 Diedre Davidson smiles before jacking a three for Takhini Gas.
The women basketball league's first-place team was outscored 53-17 in the championship game Sunday, as Drift Geomatics took advantage of Takhini Gas' struggling offence.
The women basketball league's first-place team was outscored 53-17 in the championship game Sunday, as Drift Geomatics took advantage of Takhini Gas' struggling offence.
Amy Vermeulen poured in 16 points and Amanda Keleher netted 14 for Drift Geomatics, who were up 19-4 after the first quarter, and simply cruised the rest of the way.
Stephanie Wilson was also in double digits, with 11 points.
Nat Gionet and Michelle King managed to net six points each for Takhini Gas.
The championship was held at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
Drift Geomatics was up 31-6 at the half, and led 49-15 after three quarters.
"They were missing (shots),鈥 said Wilson. "Two of their girls usually hit every shot, and they just weren't going in.鈥
Due to a score clock malfunction, the teams were unable to keep track of the game score except between quarters, when they were able to confirm with scorekeepers.
"I didn't even realize we were winning by that much,鈥 Wilson admitted of the lopsided final score. "That was too bad.鈥
Wilson, a newcomer to the league from Vancouver, said she was happy to see a four-team women's league competing in the Yukon capital.
"It's such a good way to meet people and get involved in the community,鈥 she said.
Winning the league was a dream come true, she quipped.
"It means so much to me,鈥 she chuckled. "Winning Whitehorse Women's Basketball League 鈥 I wish we could get T-shirts and I could wear it around town. No, it's good.鈥
Takhini Gas player Megan Freese said her side was short a couple of their regular players, and that cost them.
"The red played really good man-on-man defence, and we couldn't seem to break in,鈥 she said post-game. "We were hoping to win, but red's been really strong and they've been getting stronger as the season's gone along. They're the only team in the league that plays man, so it's always a bit of a shock when we play them.鈥
The two teams played with five players a side, and minor injuries to both Wilson and Freese saw league organizer Diedre Davidson enter the game to play for both sides for short stretches.
Davidson sank a late three-pointer for Takhini Gas.
Regardless of the final score, Freese said she was just happy to see the local women's league back in action after low numbers saw the league relegated to simple drop-in basketball.
"The last two years, we've only been doing drop-in, so it's neat to see a bunch of new faces and a lot of old faces come back,鈥 she said.
The conclusion of the regular season saw Takhini Gas finish first with a 13-11 record, with Drift Geomatics in second at 12.5-11.5 due to two ties against fourth-place Feature Foods (10.5-13.5). The Kopper Kweens finished third at 12-12.
