Terry Fox Run looks to expand across Yukon

"I'm not a dreamer, and I'm not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.”

"I'm not a dreamer, and I'm not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to.”

Words written by a true Canadian hero. Terry Fox had a single dream – a world without cancer.

He sought to reach out to every corner of Canada, and beyond, when he embarked on his Marathon of Hope.

Fox ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days straight on one leg, to raise awareness for the need for research funding.

When his own cancer spread, he was forced to stop running. The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

This year marks the 34th annual Terry Fox Run and the Yukon branch is seeking motivated, compassionate volunteer run organizers to bring Terry's legacy to all Yukon communities.

"It would be such a shame for the people of the Yukon to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry's legacy alive as every community no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000,” said Donna White, provincial director for the Terry Fox Foundation British Columbia and Yukon.

The run is an opportunity for people of a variety of backgrounds and ages to come together and contribute to the $650 million already raised for cancer research worldwide, in Fox's name.

The runs are a non-competitive, all-inclusive, family oriented activity where participants can run, walk, blade or bike.

The registration fee is by donation and there is no minimum pledge amount. Participants have the option to be recognized as a corporate team, individual participant, or even as a part of "Terry's Team” of cancer survivors.

Every participant is a special part of the cause, as living proof that cancer research saves lives.

The volunteer run organizer will recruit committee members, confirm the route, promote the run and oversee run day activities.

The time commitment ranges from two to four hours weekly during the months leading up to the National Run Day on Sept. 14.

Whether as a couple or individual, the volunteer run organizer will be assisted by the Terry Fox Foundation in the planning process, and given the resources to make it a success.

"If you've given a dollar, you are part of the Marathon of Hope.” Fox's words continue to ring true.

The Terry Fox Foundation would welcome volunteers to join its truly grassroots organization to assist more communities in joining them to work together to outrun cancer.
