Warren Miller's "Ticket to Ride” film event at the Yukon Arts Centre raised expectations for the ski season and funds for Mount Sima Friday.
More than 250 people bought tickets to the event, which launched the ski season and celebrated the Whitehorse ski hill. All proceeds from the event went to support Mt. Sima.
Sportslife, Board Stiff and Air North used the event to announce their new program at this annual season opener – Kids on the Mountain.
The goal is just as it appears – get children out on Mt. Sima.
Air North purchased 25 children's lift tickets and 25 youth lift tickets for the cause, a cost of more than $1,250.
Sportslife and Board Stiff then matched these tickets by donating complete snowboard or ski package rentals, including helmets, for each at a value of nearly $1,200.
These tickets and rentals will be donated to the Kids Rec Fund and provided to families with a lower income.
MJ Warshawski from Sportslife and Board Stiff went on to issue a challenge. She and MC Kalin Pallett of Up North Adventures circulated donation boxes through the audience.
The challenge was that for every ticket the audience bought, Board Stiff and Sportslife would match it with free equipment and helmet rentals. They collected upwards of $1,550.
"That is what Mt Sima is all about,” Warshawski said. "It is about community and always has been. It is about volunteers who have dedicated thousands of hours. It is about audience members who, when asked to throw in a toonie, throw in a $20.”
"It's a double win,” added Deb Ryan of Air North. "More kids can get outside to play and be active – something that we all know is important – plus more tickets were sold to support Mt. Sima, our community hill.”
