Trio cycles to tie in Haines Junction 88 debut

The new race hosted by U Kon鈥圗chelon went down to the wire, with Aaron Foos, Marcus Waterus and Stephen Ball finishing the expert male division in a tie with a time of 2:29:43.
A slight mix-up in the location of the finish line resulted in the cycling trio to agree on a tie post-race.
Craig Machtans finished behind them in 2:37:54, followed by Joel Macht in 2:46:26.
Organizer Trena Irving was the top woman, finishing the 88 kilometres in 3:41:55. She cycled the first 22 kms in tandem with Cayla Jackson, before completing the first leg with Ava Staley. Irving cycled the final 44 km solo.
"I鈥坵asn't sure how many people would show up as it was wet and not great weather,鈥濃圛rving admitted. "To my surprise, we had 24 riders. I was very happy with the people who came to make this first-year event a success.鈥
The event marked the second race of the year on the Yukon cycling club's calendar.
In the men's sport division, Jon Heaton finished first in 2:49:21, followed by Pete Smilie (2:49:27) and Shea Hoffman (2:52:10).
Meanwhile, Simi Morrison won the women's sport division, crossing the finish line in 4:01:06. Placing second was Marty Ritchie (4:12:12), followed by Lynn Cheverie in third (4:13:50).
Several cyclists completed 44 kms. Peter Staley completed the shorter route in 1:45 to win the masters division, while youngster Tristan Muir was tops in the U13 category, finishing in two hours.
Lisa Pauls was the top female in the 44-km race, finishing in 1:42:58, followed by her daughter, Erin, in 2:02:06.
