With a June 6 deadline looming, Kraft Canada and TSN are still hoping to have a Yukon entry in their annual summer contest.
With a June 6 deadline looming, Kraft Canada and TSN are still hoping to have a Yukon entry in their annual summer contest.
Now in its sixth consecutive year, the Kraft Celebration Tour opened for bids late last month with the goal of helping Canadians build better places to play.
Whether that's creating parks, improving baseball fields, or upgrading basketball courts, Kraft Canada and TSN want to inspire communities to get active.
Until June 6, Canadians can nominate their project at kraftcelebrationtour.ca for the chance to win $25,000 towards building a better place to play in their community. Each of the 10 winning communities will receive a $25,000 prize.
New this year, one top-10 community project will win a $100,000 grand prize as decided by Canadians through two days of voting.
All winners will also host a live broadcast of Canada's most-watched sports news program, TSN's Sportscentre, as part of this summer's cross-country tour Aug. 15 to 24. Leading the special broadcasts will be anchors Darren Dutchyshen, Jennifer Hedger and Kate Beirness.
Last summer, Whitehorse was a top-20 finalist, with the Yukon Curling Association's bid for upgraded curling rocks and ice improvements losing out to the N.W.T. community of Fort Smith, which was looking to build a temporary outdoor ice rink.
All communities in the Yukon have the chance to win this year if they submit a nomination, Renee Rouse, TSN's communications manager, told the Star.
So far, there have been no entries from the territory.
"There are only a few weeks left to nominate and we'd love to encourage nominations from the Yukon,鈥濃圧ouse said.
To submit a bid, TSN鈥坣eeds to know how $100,000 could help your community build a better place to play.
The Kraft Celebration Tour has donated $1.25 million to 50 deserving communities across the country since 2009.
"We believe that healthy, active living starts with having places to play,鈥 said Jack Hewitt, Kraft Canada's vice-president of consumer insights and portfolio marketing.
"We're very proud of the Kraft Celebration Tour and our ability to support recreational facilities in cities and towns coast to coast. It is inspiring to watch communities rally around a common goal and show such incredible hometown pride.鈥

Carcross has no community center, no curling rink, no arena, no hockey rink, absolutely nothing for our youth and the community to do!

Carmacks is in need of an new skating rink or arena. It is one of four communities that does not have an arena. Our population continues to grow and interest in hockey young and old is still strong. A safer and warm facility will help us maintain a higher interest in Hockey.

I think our community of Haines Junction Yukon Territory could use $10,000 to build a center to bring our community together to do physical activities and a place to gather. We have to travel almost 2 hours to go to Whitehorse to be able to access a swimming pool during winter and then they close the rink down in the summer so we can't use it either. Please pick us! It's beautiful here, you will love it.
