The Grade 7 student at 脡cole 脡milie-Tremblay bested 脡cole Whitehorse Elementary鈥檚 Derek Deuling in a back-and-forth three-set affair (10-11, 11-9, 11-10) to claim the badminton boys singles title yesterday.
鈥淚 knew it was out,鈥 Potvin said of the game-ending shot from Deuling. 鈥淚 lost to him earlier in the day, so it was nice that I got to get my revenge.鈥
The game featured plenty of extended rallies as both players left it all on the court.
With the win, Potvin earned a gold medal in his first school badminton tournament.
Meanwhile, Kiara Fitzsimmons took the girls singles title over 脡cole Whitehorse Elementary Grade 7 classmate Emma Boyd.
The two shared a hug following the game, which saw Fitzsimmons win 8-11, 11-10 and 11-9.
鈥淚t was a bittersweet win, because I had to beat my friend,鈥 Fitzsimmons said through tears. 鈥淏ut I鈥檓 competitive. I鈥坙ike playing sports a lot.鈥
The first-year badminton player said she didn鈥檛 lose a game during the tournament.
Other winners at 脡cole 脡milie-Tremblay included doubles players: Carl Foreman and Antoine Gigu猫re from 脡milie-Tremblay (Boys); 脡milie-Tremblay鈥檚 Sarah-Michel Auger and Ljubica Tokic (Girls); and Whitehorse Elementary鈥檚 Emma Marnik and Liam Hudson (Mixed).
Players from 12 schools 鈥 including Teslin and Watson Lake鈥 spent the day playing games in the gymnasiums at Elijah Smith Elementary and 脡cole 脡milie-Tremblay.
At Elijah Smith, singles winners were Holy Family鈥檚 Tony Kim and Teslin鈥檚 Savana Kremer.
Doubles winners were: Teslin鈥檚 Harold Guinanao and Levi Stoneman (Boys); Holy Family鈥檚 Amy Vanderkley and Abby Roberts (Girls); and Golden Horn鈥檚 Kasi Koltelko and Dawson Smith (Mixed).
More than 180 students participated in the Yukon Schools鈥 Athletic Association tournament.
