U Kon Echelon cyclists aim high at Skagway Hill Climb
U Kon Echelon cyclists gave their lungs and thighs an intense early-season workout Sunday at the Skagway Hill Climb.

The race began at 11 a.m. AT and saw racers start at Dyea and climb 19 grueling kilometres to the summit 鈥� an elevation change of roughly 1,000 metres.
"Although U Kon Echelon formally put on the Skagway Hill Climb race, many Yukoners and Alaskans climbed the hill without being in the race,鈥� explained Trena Irving, the local cycling club's head coach. "There's going to be a lot of strong hill climbs at the Kluane Chilkat this year.鈥�
Skagway's Spencer Morgan won King of the Hill honours in the over-23 division, with a time of 56:55. He was the only Alaskan to officially enter the race.
Shea Hoffman was the top Yukoner, finishing the route with a time of 1:06:37.
Other results from the Skagway Hill Climb are as follows: 11-year-old Micah Taggart-Cox (1:28:54); his father Malcolm Taggart (1:28:54); nine-year-old Caius Taggart-Cox (2:08:24); and Jody Cox (2:56:15).
Junior cyclists Lucas Taggart-Cox climbed about 13 km in 1:50, while eight-year-old Ava Irving-Staley and Trena Irving went 16 km on a tandem bike in 1:57. Taggart-Cox is just seven years old.
Last week Wednesday, the club held a time trial at Miles Canyon, after participating in the Ride of Silence to commemorate cyclists killed by motorists. The race route was modified slightly due to poor road conditions along the river, so the three hills and the fast descent formed a 7.7-km race course.
Eleven cyclists participated, with results as follows: David Gonda (12:28 min); Elijah Buffalo (13:15); Spencer Skerget (14:52); Shea Hoffman (15:52); Phil Hoffman (16:47); Veronica Huggard (19:03).
Under-17 results: Mathew Knaack (17:09); David Jackson (17:55); Cayla Jackson and pilot Trena Irving (22:36) 鈥� tandem bike.
Ilza Pretorius and Surene Pretorius completed a three-km route.
The new bike club is putting on Wednesday night time trials and Sunday races, so anybody interested in road bike racing should come out for the three F's 鈥� fun, fast, and food.
Tonight, the VeloNorth Cycling Club will host a time trial at the Carcross cutoff.
