A solid, steady two days of disc golf was enough for Richard Vladars to claim title to the inaugural Whitehorse Two Course Disc Golf Tournament last weekend.

Vladars finished two-under-par on the 18-hole course at Mount McIntyre Friday night, before turning in a five-under par performance Saturday at the 18-hole course in Takhini North.

He finished seven-under-par for the tournament, edging runner-up Dan Reimer by eight strokes.

Seventeen players competed in the two-day tournament.

"I won it fairly handily,鈥 Vladars admitted today in an interview with the Star. "It was closer on the second day, but the first day I had a large lead, so I just had to cruise.鈥

Vladars' 54 edged Matt Larsen's 59 Friday, but tournament organizer Dan Reimer would match the eventual champion stroke-for-stroke Saturday, tying him with a total score of 57.

"Normally, he would be the guy to beat,鈥 Vladars said of Reimer. "I think he had a bit of an off-game on the first night.鈥

He said playing from the tournament red tees may have thrown some players off their game.

"Typically on league night, five-under or seven-under usually wins it,鈥 Vladars explained.

Vladars and Reimer built the course in Takhini North four years ago, replacing the former course that was bulldozed to make room for a new subdivision.

"We kind of know it the best,鈥 Vladars admitted. "But it's like golf. You have to maintain focus. You can't get down on yourself. If you bogey a hole, you can't let that get you down, because it's such a head game.

"It's a long game and anything can happen, right up to the last throw. You have to just play your game and try and not bogey and maintain pars. Then you'll do OK.鈥

Vladars also said practising your putting skills is key to playing above-average disc golf.

Local players compete with a variety of different discs, which alter in weight and flight patterns.

Different types of driving discs will see long-distance straight throws, or drives that will bank or fade near the end of the throw.

Different styles of throw can also alter the disc's final destination, Vladars explained.

The disc golf community gathers for league play every Tuesday night at the Mount McIntyre course throughout the summer. The season will wrap up sometime in October.

"We will go until it gets too cold or too dark,鈥 Vladars said. "There's a lot of die-hards.鈥

The league is always open to new players of any age. Vladars said playing disc golf is a good way to meet new people, and also provides an avenue to exercise outdoors.
