Volleyball Yukon celebrated local talent last weekend with a one-day tournament at Porter Creek Secondary School.

鈥淲e put a lot of games into a short period of time,鈥� said tournament coordinator Heather Julsrud.

Normally, the tournament runs over two days, but with a scheduling conflict in the gym, the tournament was fit into one day.

There were four divisions contested over the weekend by about 120 athletes.

The U13 division was won by Red Team, which beat the Black Team 2-1. They came back after dropping the first set 16-25, to win the next two sets 25-17 and 15-6.

The U14 division was won by the U14 Boys, which beat the U15 Girls 2 2-0, taking the first set 25-12 and the second set 25-20.

In the Open division finals, the U15 Boys, who were competing up, faced the Women鈥檚 1 team on Court 1, while the U18 Boys beat Men鈥檚 1 on Court 3. Women鈥檚 1 beat the U15 Boys.

Open division scores were not available at press time.

For D鈥橝rcy Hill, the U18 Boys coach, who competed on the Men鈥檚 1 team, it was a chance for him to see how his athletes compete from the other side of the net.

鈥淚t was fun to see from the other side what improvements they鈥檝e made all season,鈥� he said.

The U18 Boys will be attending the national championships in Saskatoon at the beginning of May before setting their sights on the Canada Summer Games later in the summer.

The divisions are based on age and skill, so some of the teams were competing up in divisions, like the U15 Boys.

The middle teams 鈥渇lip and flop,鈥� between divisions said Julsrud. The decisions are based on coach recommendation.

Since the majority of the volleyball players鈥� non-scholastic league volleyball games take place Outside, this tournament is held to showcase their talent to family, friends and the community.

Yukon teams will be competing in provincial championships over the coming weekends in Alberta and B.C.
