The Yukon Curling Association crowned the 2013 Yukon Dominion Club Champions this past weekend, at an event hosted at the Mayo Curling Club.

Six teams from across the territory – representing four affiliated curling clubs –competed for the opportunity to represent the Yukon at the upcoming Dominion Nationals, to be held in Thunder Bay, Ont. in November.

In the end, it was two teams representing the Whitehorse Curling Club that came out on top.

In men's competition, Whitehorse skip Pat Paslawski, and teammates Doug Hamilton, Alexx Peech, and Trent Derkatch went undefeated through the double round-robin playdown to earn their national berth.

In women's action, teams representing the Whitehorse Curling Club, and the Atlin Curling Club finished with matching records of 3-1 through round-robin action, and met for a deciding tiebreaker Sunday afternoon.

Six ends into the tiebreaker, the Whitehorse rink lead by skip Nicole Baldwin along with teammates Ladene Shaw, Helene Strong, and Rhonda Horte, had established a 10-1 lead over the opposition.

Daniyel McNeil's Atlin rink conceded the game, and the berth to the national championship to their opponents from Whitehorse.

Other clubs represented at the Yukon Championship event were the local Mayo Curling Club, with a men's team led by skip Kevin Johnstone, as well the Dawson Curling Club with representation in both the men's and women's events, led by skips Mark Castellarin and Myrtha Schilliger respectively.

The two Whitehorse teams will move on to represent the Yukon at the Dominion National Curling Club Championships at the Fort William Curling Club from Nov. 18 to 23.

Paslawski and Baldwin won the local Dominion playdown in early March, but needed to face off against the top community rinks before earning the right to play nationally.

Both skips have stated that their goal for this season was to play at the Dominion Nationals.

Last year, rinks led by Ray Mikkelsen and Jody Smallwood represented the Whitehorse Curling Club at the Dominion playdowns in Scarborough, Ont.

The Dominion Curling Club Championship was formed in 2009 to identify the top club level curling rink in the country.
