Jeff Wiggins shot a two-under 70 to open play at the 2013 PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada in Port St. Lucie, Fla. today.

The director of golf at Mountain View Golf Club said he felt "relaxed and confident,鈥 but added his score could have been lower if not for some missed putts on the back nine.

"As most golfers know, you can't win the tournament on the first day, but you can certainly shoot yourself out of it,鈥濃圵iggins said in an email to the Star.

"My guess is that there will be some low scores at the end of the day, but two-under par after round one positions me well for moving day tomorrow.鈥

Wiggins is drawing his inspiration from his Canada Games athletes as he competes in his third straight national championship.

"I had to literally do everything I coached them to do in order to mentally prepare for this event,鈥 he said. "So today's round was for them.鈥
