Runners undeterred by inclement weather attend race by the dozens

Just over a year out of the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg next summer, Team Yukon Athletics hopeful Jack Amos posted a dominating performance at the Midnight Dome Race.

On the largely vertical – 564 metres of elevation gain – 7.2 km course, Dawson City local Amos, 15, pounded up the trail to finish in 35:24.

Close on his heels was fellow Dawson local, Logan Boehmer (37:42).

The course began at the Palace Grand Theatre on Saturday morning and racers had to jump over their first obstacle as road grading was taking place outside Klondike Kate’s.

The 38 runners and 13 walkers were greeted at the Midnight Dome summit with coffee and baked goods.

The Midnight Dome Race predates the Dawson City Music Festival, which were both held last weekend.

The rainy weather that had plagued the weekend held off for the few hours the race took.

A black bear with a brazen attitude had been active in Dawson last week and conservation officers were alert.

The top female runner was Jessica Kaiser, of Cochrane Ont., in a time of 41:33.

Wendy Cairns, of Dawson, was the first walker to the top, completing the course in 1:01:58, while the first male walker was 14-year-old Isaak Dube, also of Dawson in 1:02:11.

The top male and female in the running and walking categories received a free Air North Flight.
