Young squash players impress in junior event

Mustafa Syed finished fourth in the Boys Under-17 Main Division, while Sana Syed and Ehsan Idrees were also impressive, winning the B Division categories.
Fellow Yukoners Kai Knorr and Stephen Grundmanis competed in the Boys U-19 Main Division, but did not place.
Idrees won the boys U-17 B division crown over fellow Yukoner Graydon McDonnell.
Sana Syed won the girls U-15 B division, while Ava Cairns took third. Another Yukoner, Kennedy Cairns, won the girls U-19 B鈥坉ivision consolation bronze.
The tournament was held at the Cedar Hill鈥圫quash Club.
The out-of-town junior event comes on the heels of Squash Yukon's Mid-Winter Hump Tournament, held earlier this month at Better Bodies Whitehorse.
Top-ranked Julien Revel beat Blaine Tessier to win the A final, while the junior-aged Knorr held off Idrees to claim the B final.
Victor Lavanderos took down Muhammad Idrees to win the round-robin C draw, while 14-year-old Sana Syed beat Jada Smith-Kwok in the final match of the round-robin D draw to claim that title.
Ava Cairns defeated Kayden King in a closely-fought junior final.
In total, 34 players competed in the tournament, with eight taking part in the junior draw.
Meanwhile in local rec league action, Yukon Tree Services leads Div. 1 with 215 points at the end of Round 2. EBA鈥圗ngineering is currently holding down second with 203 points, while TSL鈥圕ontractors Ltd. is third with 189 total points.
In action Tuesday, the league leaders beat Assante 14-11, EBA Engineering hammered Solstice Landscaping 19-6, and TSL鈥圕ontractors Ltd. tied Dynamic Systems 15-15.
In Thursday night Div. 2 action, North Star Storage (182 points) continues to hold a slim two-point lead over Aurora Geosciences for the league lead.
Better Bookkeeping (177 points) is three points behind Aurora Geosciences in the standings for third.
Last week, North Star Storage beat Sterling Insurance 16-14, Aurora Geosciences routed Better Bookeeping 24-10, and Yukon鈥圔rewing Company edged High Country Inn 16-15.
