Yukon's women's curling team defeated Quebec 13-2 in their second match of the championship round Wednesday at the Canadian juniors in Fort McMurray.
Yukon's women's curling team defeated Quebec 13-2 in their second match of the championship round Wednesday at the Canadian juniors in Fort McMurray.
Quebec took the first point, but Yukon responded taking two points in the second end, one in the third, two in fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth, giving up one
in the seventh, finishing the game in the eighth end taking four points.
The team is led by skip Sarah Koltun and includes third Chelsea Duncan, second Patty Wallingham and lead Jenna Duncan.
Earlier on Wednesday the women's team lost 8-7 to Manitoba in their first match of the championship round.
Manitoba took two points in the first end, but Koltun's rink responded taking three points in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth.
Manitoba came back taking one in the fifth, gave up another to Koltun in the sixth, took three in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Yukon took one point in the ninth but lost in the tenth as Manitoba won the final point. Manitoba went into the match with a 6-0 record, compared to Koltun's 4-2 record.
"We had a really good first half of the game and then it kind of dropped off a little bit at the end, and then we were tied going into the last end so we had a chance to win it but we couldn't quite pull it off,鈥 said Koltun, from Fort McMurray, following the game.
Going into the Quebec game Koltun said the team was just going to have to go in and do their best.
"Hopefully that will be enough to get another win,鈥 Koltun said, and of course it was.
The team's coach, Lindsay Moldowan said they are doing really well and they were happy with their position even before the win over Quebec.
"We've struggled a little bit but we're playing the top teams in Canada. For the most part I think that they're curling as well as they can and that was just them coming up on the wrong side of the scoreboard a few times. But I'm happy with where we're sitting right now. I can't really complain about it,鈥 she said.
"This is our seventh time here and that's curling, sometimes the shots don't work in your favour and I wouldn't really change anything that they're doing right now.鈥
Koltun said the team is happy they've made it to the championship round.
"It was one of our goals going into the week to try and make it this far. We had a couple close games that could have gone either way and so we're hoping to keep improving and play a little better and get a few more wins under our belt before this round is over.鈥
While they're hoping to move into the finals, Koltun is remaining pragmatic.
"We can only control what we're doing and how we're playing so we'll just try to do as well as we can, and if we make it that far that's awesome, if not we're just going to be happy with how we finish.鈥
Yukon played Nova Scotia today at 1 p.m. and is schedule to face Ontario Friday at 8 a.m.
Nova Scotia was sitting at a 3-5 record coming out of Wednesday's games, while Ontario had only lost one of its eight games.
