Yukon-Alaska continue rekindling former soccer exchange

Four Yukon Strikers Soccer Club Teams jumped on the Alaska Marine Line Ferry and the Fjord Express and headed for Juneau to play in the Sister City Exchange Soccer Tournament over the Canada Day long weekend.

The teams traveling to Juneau were the U12 girls, U14 boys and girls and the U16 girls.

The summer exchange was the counterpart to the fall tournament held in Whitehorse in the indoor facility at the Canada Games Centre. These two tournaments have rekindled the old exchange the two cities had been involved with the past 20 odd years and that had been cancelled for the past few years. Juneau brought approximately 55 players to Whitehorse in April and we took 45 to Juneau this past weekend. Included with the players from Whitehorse were two Dawson City players and one from Atlin.

The weather was absolutely fantastic with a sunny and calm day for the ferry ride on Friday. The players, coaches and parents were treated to a very relaxing trip complete with beautiful vistas and the occasional whale sighting.

Saturday started with a slight drizzle but by midday it was sunny and 25 degrees. The Juneau technical director, Matt Dussenbury set up two tournaments, one full field and one 6 v 6. Games were played between the teams from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Games resumed on Sunday with another very warm and sunny day starting again at 9 a.m. and finishing at 8 p.m.
