Yukon golfer Trever Harris has qualified for the B.C. Golf Association junior and amateur championship tournaments scheduled for next month.

The 16-year-old is currently in his second year of studies at the Brent Morrison Golf Academy on Vancouver Island.

Harris qualified for the B.C. juniors with strong games at both Nanaimo and Morning麻豆社区golf clubs recently, finishing with a 76 and an 80 to finish 10th out of 30 competitors.

The BCGA Junior Championship will be held at Revelstoke Golf and Country Club July 2 to 5.

He has missed the cut twice previously, but this year he feels "pretty sure鈥 he will make the cut.

"My coach Brent and I have really worked on my swing, short game and putting,鈥 he said. "If you can't make those putts, or chip it close to tap in for par, then it's going to be a long and tough round.鈥

Since enrolling at Brent Morrison Golf Academy, his handicap has improved from 15 to three.

Last year, he qualified for the junior tournament at the Mountain View Golf Club in Whitehorse.

"This year, my plan was just to stay down here and play, since B.C. is the second biggest zone.鈥

Meanwhile, Harris shot a 73 and 79 at Eagle Crest Golf Club to qualify for the BCGA Amateur Championship 鈥 the second score coming despite windy, wet conditions in the first amateur tournament he has ever entered.

The championship is open to 156 amateur golfers, and features 72 holes stroke play with a cut to 70 and ties after 36 holes.

The tournament will be held at Radium Hot Springs' Radium Resort from July 9 to 12.

Harris' goal is to finish top-25 in the tournament and to move on to the Canadian amateurs in Victoria, B.C.

"I was pretty happy I qualified for that,鈥 he told the Star. "I kind of have a roll going.鈥

Harris has been playing golf competitively for four years. The Hamilton-born golfer moved to Whitehorse with his family at the age of 11, and grew up in Porter Creek.

"Usually I'm the youngest competitor whenever I play golf,鈥 he said. "I feel a little intimidated, but it's kind of cool because I still have four more years of junior golf. If I can play along the top players in Canada and compete with them, then it's going to be a little different when I get older.鈥

Earlier this month, Dan King won the Yukon's spot at the BCGA amateurs, and James McGrath earned the junior position at a qualifier event held locally.

Gord Zealand and Vic Istchenko qualified for the B.C. senior championships, which will happen at Eaglepoint Golf Resort in Kamloops July 29 to 31.
