The 2014 SwimBC Long Course AA Championships in Victoria last weekend proved to be another successful meet for the Whitehorse Glacier Bears.
Five young swimmers returned home with a total of 10 medals, swim coach Malwina Bukszowana reported.
Eleven-year-old Alex Petriw led the way with two golds and a silver, qualifying for AAAs in every event he swam.
Petriw's golds came in the 400 free and 200 free, and he grabbed a silver in the 100 free.
He also set new club records in both the 400 and 800 free.
Meghan Pennington, also 11, paced the girls with three silvers (400 free, 200 free, 200 back) and a bronze (50 free).
After barely qualifying, Pennington improved throughout the weekend, eventually qualifying for AAAs.
"Great improvement during the entire year,鈥濃圔ukszowana said of her swimmer. "I can say she is the most improved female swimmer in my squad.
"It was very nice to watch both of these 11-year-old swimmers gaining so much experience and having so much hunger for more wins,鈥 the coach added. "And all of it was done with a smile.鈥
Twelve-year-old Hannah Kingscote also medalled, picking up gold in the 100 fly, silver in the 200 back and bronze in the 100 back. She set new club records in the 50, 100 and 200 back swims.
"This girl has underwater power like a dolphin,鈥 Bukszowana said. "Her underwater fly kick off the walls was bringing her ahead of other finalists ... If she keeps working on it, she will be very dangerous on the turns.鈥
Dannica Nelson and Emily Crist, both 15, also excelled at the meet, but did not medal.
Both had powerful swims throughout the championships, including an A final for Crist 鈥 her first ever at an AA鈥坋vent.
