FAIRBANKS 鈥 A medal finish for the Yukon始s junior female hockey team simply wasn始t to be at the 2014 Arctic Winter Games.
Despite a two-goal outburst from Sierra Oakley in the third period Friday, the Yukon wasn始t able to come back from an early deficit, dropping their bronze-medal game 4-2 to their rivals from the Northwest Territories.
Davina McLeod, a Female Mustangs player from Aklavik, N.W.T., opened the scoring. Caitlin Chambers, Bryn Hill and Megan Evoy would also add goals for the N.W.T.
Fort Smith goalie Atikin Hehn stopped 15 shots for the win, while Yukon goalie Abigail Turner turned aside 13 of 17 shots in the loss.
"It means a lot, because I don始t think the girls have won in a while,鈥 said 14-year-old N.W.T. forward Dakota Earle of her team始s bronze-ulu victory.
"Their team is really good and I think they should have won a ulu too.鈥
The Yukon had bested the N.W.T. 2-1 in their round-robin game.
Down 3-0 early in the third period, the Yukon began to storm back thanks to the hot stick of Oakley.
The 16-year-old Haines Junction speedster outraced a N.W.T. defender the length of the ice to snag a loose puck, before burying it behind Hehn.
"I love to skate,鈥 Oakley said. "Whenever I see something that始s barely icing, I just skate as hard as I can for it, and keep on thinking 驶dig deeper, dig deeper.始鈥
Moments later, the N.W.T. struck for their fourth goal of the game, however, before Oakley struck again on the powerplay to bring the score back to within two.
"They were pretty key to help bring the girls始 hopes up,鈥 Oakley said of her two goals.
"It was an amazing tournament and an amazing experience overall. We loved every second of it.鈥
Oakley始s two goals made her the Yukon始s high scorer for the tournament. She finished tied for 13th with three goals and one assist.
Star blueliner Tamara Greek had two goals and two helpers for the Yukon, while Maddie Nicholson had a goal and three assists.
Host Alaska beat Alberta North 1-0 to clinch gold Friday.
